Pazari i Vjetër i Gjirokastrës (Old Bazaar of Gjirokastër) is the historic commercial heart of Albania’s UNESCO-listed “Stone City.” Known for its cobbled streets, traditional stone buildings, and Ottoman-era urban character, it serves as one of the most recognizable landmarks in southern Albania and a focal point for visitors exploring the historic center.
Historical Background

The bazaar developed during the Ottoman period and became the city's principal trading district. Much of what visitors see today dates from reconstruction after a major nineteenth-century fire, though the area preserves the layout and atmosphere of the earlier marketplace. The historic center of Gjirokastër, including the bazaar, forms part of the UNESCO World Heritage designation recognized for its exceptionally preserved Ottoman-era urban fabric.
Architecture and Atmosphere

The district is characterized by stone-paved lanes, white façades, and steep streets climbing toward the castle. The bazaar's distinctive architecture reflects the city's nickname, the “City of Stone,” and creates a setting where traditional houses, shops, cafés, and artisan businesses blend into a remarkably cohesive historic landscape.
Visiting Experience

Today the bazaar remains an active cultural and commercial center. Visitors can browse local crafts and souvenirs, enjoy cafés and restaurants, and explore the surrounding historic quarter on foot. The area's steep cobblestone streets and preserved architecture make it one of the most photographed parts of Gjirokastër.
Nearby Notable Locations

Within and around the bazaar area are landmarks such as Qafa e Pazarit (Bazaar), the traditional shopping area represented by Souvenir Gjirokastra, and the historic attraction Ali Pasha Bridge. These sites help illustrate the commercial, cultural, and architectural heritage that makes the old town one of Albania's most celebrated destinations.
