Kalaja e Tepelenës is a historic fortress overlooking the town of Tepelenë in southern Albania. Best known for its association with Ali Pasha of Ioannina, the castle occupies a commanding position above the confluence of the Vjosë and Drino rivers and remains one of the region's most significant Ottoman-era landmarks.
History

he site likely originated as a Byzantine fortification, with records mentioning a castle here by the late 15th century. After earlier structures were damaged during Ottoman-Venetian conflicts, a smaller Ottoman fortress was established. In 1819, Ali Pasha greatly expanded the complex into the large fortress visible today, although construction was never fully completed before his death in 1822.
Architecture

The fortress covers roughly 4–5.5 hectares and follows the natural contours of the hill rather than a regular geometric plan. Its defensive design includes massive stone walls, three principal gates, and three polygonal towers. The eastern entrance, known as the Vizier Gate, still preserves a historic Greek inscription dating to the expansion under Ali Pasha.
Why it matters

Beyond its military role, the castle served as one of Ali Pasha's principal residences and an important administrative center for his powerful regional state. Its elevated position offers sweeping views across the Vjosë Valley, illustrating why the site controlled routes between southern and central Albania for centuries. Although many internal buildings have disappeared, the surviving walls remain an important cultural monument and a symbol of Tepelenë's history.
