Spaç Prison is a former political prison and forced-labor camp in the village of Spaç Prison. It became one of the most infamous symbols of political repression during Albania's communist era and is now recognized as a national cultural monument, remembered as an important site of historical memory.
History
Established in 1968, the prison was built alongside a copper and pyrite mine, where many political prisoners were forced to work under extremely harsh conditions. The camp operated until the collapse of the communist regime in the early 1990s and held writers, intellectuals, clergy, and others imprisoned for political reasons.
Why it is significant

One of the site's defining moments came during the 1973 Spaç revolt, when prisoners staged a rare act of organized resistance against the regime by raising the Albanian flag without the communist emblem. The uprising was quickly suppressed, and several of its leaders were executed, making the event a lasting symbol of resistance to dictatorship in Albania.
Preservation and legacy

The deteriorating prison has attracted international attention for its historical importance. It was included on the World Monuments Watch list of endangered heritage sites, and conservation organizations have worked on documentation, digital reconstruction, and long-term plans to preserve the complex as a place of remembrance and education.
