Sazan Island

Sazan Island (Ishulli i Sazanit) is the largest island in Albania, located at the entrance to the Bay of Vlorë where the Adriatic and Ionian Seas meet. Long closed as a strategic military zone, it is now known for its combination of rugged natural landscapes, Cold War relics, and protected marine ecosystems. The island has become one of the most distinctive destinations on the Albanian Riviera.

Geography and Natural Setting

Geography and Natural Setting

Sazan occupies a highly strategic position near the Strait of Otranto, the narrow channel linking the Adriatic Sea to the wider Mediterranean. Its coastline features limestone cliffs, secluded coves, clear waters, and Mediterranean vegetation. Because access was restricted for decades, much of the island's environment remained relatively undisturbed, helping preserve diverse plant and animal life.

Military Legacy

For much of the 20th century, Sazan served as a heavily fortified military outpost. Italian forces, and later communist Albania with Soviet support, developed extensive defensive infrastructure including bunkers, tunnels, barracks, shelters, and submarine-related facilities. Many of these structures remain visible today, creating a rare open-air record of Cold War military architecture.

Part of a Marine Protected Area

The island forms part of the Karaburun–Sazan Marine Park, established to protect one of Albania's most important coastal ecosystems. The surrounding waters support rich marine biodiversity, while the island itself provides habitat for numerous plant and bird species. Its protected status has made conservation a central issue in discussions about future development.

Visiting the Island

Visiting the Island

Today, Sazan is primarily visited on day trips by boat from Vlorë. Visitors are drawn by opportunities for swimming, snorkeling, diving, and exploring abandoned military sites. Facilities remain limited, and much of the island retains a remote, undeveloped character that contrasts with more built-up parts of the Albanian Riviera.

Current Significance

Current Significance

In recent years, Sazan has attracted international attention because of proposals for large-scale tourism development. Supporters view such projects as an opportunity to boost tourism and investment, while critics have raised concerns about environmental protection, heritage preservation, and transparency. The debate has made the island a prominent symbol in broader discussions about Albania's future development and conservation priorities.
