Founded around the 6th century BCE, it became an important port linking the Illyrian and Greek worlds and later played a strategic role during the Roman period because of its position at the entrance to the Bay of Vlorë.
Historical significance

The city's location beside the Pashaliman Lagoon made it a valuable maritime and trading center for centuries. Ancient authors mention Oricum as an important harbor, and archaeological research has uncovered evidence of Greek, Illyrian, and Roman occupation, illustrating the area's long history as a naval and commercial hub.
What to see

Visitors can explore the remains of the city walls, parts of the acropolis, residential buildings, and a small ancient theater, along with other excavated structures that reveal the layout of the ancient settlement. Only a portion of the city has been excavated, so ongoing archaeological work continues to expand understanding of the site.
Visiting experience

The archaeological park sits within an area associated with the Pashaliman naval base, so access may involve passing a security checkpoint. The site is relatively compact, making it suitable for a short visit, and its quiet setting near the lagoon and coast adds to its appeal for travelers interested in both history and scenery.
Conservation and importance

Orikum is regarded as one of southern Albania's key archaeological parks. In 2026, Albanian authorities approved updated zoning and a management plan to strengthen the site's protection, preservation, and long-term administration, reflecting its importance as part of the country's cultural heritage.
