Natural Environment

Natural Environment

Covering roughly 42 square kilometers, the lagoon is separated from the Adriatic Sea by a narrow strip of dunes and coastal land. The shallow waters, generally less than 1.5 meters deep, were formed through sediment deposits carried by the Vjosa River over thousands of years, creating a complex wetland habitat of exceptional ecological value.

Wildlife and Birdlife

The lagoon is internationally important for bird conservation and serves as a major stopover along migratory routes between Europe and Africa. Flamingos have become its most recognizable residents, and the area also supports pelicans, herons, egrets, ducks, and many other species. Seasonal migrations can bring tens of thousands of birds to the lagoon, making it one of Albania’s premier birdwatching destinations.

Zvërnec and Cultural Heritage

Within the lagoon lies the small island of Zvërnec, connected to the mainland by a wooden footbridge. The island is known for its cypress forest and the historic Byzantine-era Monastery of St. Mary, one of the most photographed cultural landmarks in the Vlorë region. The combination of natural scenery and cultural heritage gives the area a character that is unusual among Mediterranean wetlands.

Visiting Experience

Laguna e Nartës is best known for nature photography, birdwatching, walking along the coastal dunes, and exploring the salt-pan landscapes surrounding the wetland. Access is typically easy from Vlorë, and many visitors combine the lagoon with a visit to Zvërnec Island. The quieter atmosphere and open landscapes make it a contrast to Albania’s more crowded beach destinations.

Conservation Importance

Conservation Importance

The lagoon forms part of the broader Vjosa–Narta protected area and is regarded as one of the most significant wetland ecosystems in the Mediterranean region. In recent years it has also been at the center of environmental debates concerning nearby infrastructure and tourism development, reflecting the challenge of balancing conservation with economic growth.
