Kalaja e Libohovës is an Ottoman-era hilltop castle overlooking the town of Libohovë in southern Albania. Built in the late 18th century, it is one of the region's most recognizable landmarks, valued for its commanding views, distinctive architecture, and connection to the powerful ruler Ali Pasha of Ioannina.
History

The castle was constructed between 1796 and 1798 by Ali Pasha of Ioannina, likely on the foundations of an older fortification. According to local tradition, it was built as a wedding gift for his sister, Shanisha, after her marriage into the influential Libohova family, reflecting both family prestige and Ali Pasha's expanding authority across southern Albania.
Architecture

The fortress combines the qualities of a defensive stronghold and a residential palace. It has a roughly rectangular layout with polygonal corner towers and stone walls surrounding a spacious interior courtyard. Although the exterior appears imposing, the relatively modest wall thickness suggests it was designed as much for noble residence as for military defense. Most of the internal residential buildings have disappeared, leaving the outer walls and towers as the dominant surviving features.
Visiting Experience

Today, visitors can freely explore the castle ruins and walk along its expansive enclosure while enjoying panoramic views across the Drino Valley, the town of Libohovë, and the surrounding mountains. The elevated setting makes it a rewarding stop for photography and for understanding the strategic importance of the region during the Ottoman period. The site is recognized as an Albanian cultural monument, and preservation work has helped stabilize the remaining structures.
