Its commanding position above the Këlcyrë Gorge and the Vjosa Valley made it an important defensive stronghold for centuries, with origins tracing back to the Illyrian period.
History

The earliest fortifications date to the 3rd–4th century BC, when Illyrian tribes established a defensive position on the rocky hill. The castle was expanded and rebuilt over several periods, including the Roman, Byzantine, medieval Albanian, and early Ottoman eras, reflecting its long military importance in controlling movement through the strategic gorge.
Architecture

The fortress follows the natural contours of the hill, with defensive walls enclosing the steepest sides while the terrain itself provides protection elsewhere. Surviving masonry includes large ancient stone blocks incorporated into later medieval construction, illustrating the site's continuous reuse across different historical periods.
Significance

Këlcyrë Castle guarded one of southern Albania's key mountain passes, a route that has been strategically important since antiquity. The nearby gorge witnessed military campaigns as early as the Second Macedonian War, when Roman and Macedonian forces fought for control of the passage in 198 BC, underscoring the enduring value of the location. The fortress has been recognized as a Category I Cultural Monument in Albania.
