Kalaja e Kaninës is a historic hilltop fortress overlooking the Bay of Vlorë in southwestern Albania. With origins dating back to the Illyrian period and major rebuilding during the Byzantine era, it is one of southern Albania's most significant cultural monuments and a landmark known for both its history and sweeping coastal views.

Historical significance

Historical significance

The earliest fortifications are generally dated to the 3rd century BCE, when the site served as a strategic stronghold controlling the approaches to the Bay of Vlorë. During the 6th century CE, the fortress was extensively rebuilt under Emperor Justinian I, and over the centuries it passed through Byzantine, Norman, Angevin, Serbian, local Albanian, and Ottoman control. Its commanding position made it an important military and administrative center for much of medieval history.

What to see

What to see

Visitors encounter substantial stone defensive walls, towers, and gateways spread across a hilltop plateau roughly 380 meters above sea level. Beyond the surviving fortifications, the castle is especially valued for its panoramic views over the Bay of Vlorë, the surrounding mountains, and the coastal plain, making it a popular destination for photography and sunset visits.

Cultural importance

The fortress is closely associated with the medieval Principality of Valona and Kanina and later with the influential Vlora family. Archaeological remains from several historical periods—including Illyrian, Byzantine, medieval, Venetian, and Ottoman phases—illustrate how the site evolved across nearly two millennia, making it an important resource for understanding Albania's history.
