Haxhi Ali’s Cave

One of the most famous sea caves in the country, visitable by tourist boat.

Shpella e Haxhi Aliut is a coastal karst sea cave on the Karaburun Peninsula near Cape Gjuhëz in southwestern Albania. It is one of the country's best-known natural attractions, recognized as a Natural Monument and located within the Karaburun–Sazan Marine Park. The cave combines striking geology, maritime legends, and dramatic Adriatic–Ionian coastal scenery.

Natural Setting

Natural Setting

Formed in limestone cliffs through marine erosion and wave action, the cave is known for its large sea-facing entrance, clear turquoise water, and unusual acoustics. Most sources describe the main chamber as roughly 30 meters long, 10–12 meters wide, and about 18 meters high, creating a cathedral-like interior illuminated by reflected light from the sea.

History and Legend

History and Legend

The cave takes its name from Haxhi Aliu, a legendary Albanian sailor and warrior from Ulcinj. Local tradition holds that he used the cave as a refuge and base along the coast during the early seventeenth century. Archaeological finds discovered inside also suggest the cave was used by traders and travelers in antiquity, giving it significance beyond folklore alone.

Visiting Experience

The cave can be reached only by sea because of the steep, rugged coastline of Karaburun. Most visitors arrive on boat excursions departing from the Vlorë area or nearby coastal ports. The attraction is especially valued for swimming, sightseeing, photography, and viewing the vivid blue reflections that appear inside the cavern when sunlight reaches the water.

Why It Matters

Shpella e Haxhi Aliut is notable as both a natural and cultural landmark. Its protected status reflects its geomorphological importance, while its connection to maritime history and Albanian coastal legends has made it one of the most recognizable destinations on the Karaburun Peninsula. The cave is frequently highlighted as one of Albania's most impressive sea caves and a signature stop within the marine park.

Location Context

The cave lies on the northwestern side of the Karaburun Peninsula in Vlorë County, within the protected waters of the Karaburun–Sazan Marine Park. Its remote setting, accessible only from the sea, helps preserve the dramatic landscape that surrounds it and contributes to its reputation as one of the highlights of the Albanian Riviera.
