Kisha e Shën Sotirit (Church of Saint Saviour) is a historic Eastern Orthodox church in the old town of Gjirokastër. Situated on the hillside below the city's fortress and near the traditional bazaar district, it is one of the religious landmarks that reflects Gjirokastër's long Orthodox Christian heritage and distinctive stone-built architecture.
Historical Background

The church is generally dated to the late eighteenth century and is associated with the period when several Orthodox religious buildings in Gjirokastër were rebuilt or expanded under Ottoman rule. It reportedly served as the seat of the local Orthodox bishop, giving it an important role in the spiritual life of the region.
Architecture and Art
Stone masonry, characteristic of Gjirokastër's UNESCO-listed historic center, defines the church's exterior appearance. Inside, visitors can find elements of traditional Orthodox religious art, including frescoes and ecclesiastical decoration that reflect the artistic traditions of southern Albania and the wider Balkans.
Location
The church occupies a scenic position on the slope leading toward Gjirokastër Fortress. Its location allows visitors to combine a visit with the historic bazaar and fortress area, while the quieter atmosphere around the church provides a contrast to the busier tourist sites nearby.
Cultural Significance
Kisha e Shën Sotirit represents an important part of Gjirokastër's multilayered religious and cultural history. Alongside mosques, monasteries, and other Orthodox churches in the region, it helps illustrate the diverse heritage that contributed to the development of the city known as the “City of Stone.”
