Butrint National Park (UNESCO)

Butrint is one of the most important ancient cities in the entire Mediterranean and one of the most valued archaeological sites in Albania. It is located in the south of the country, near Ksamil, and is surrounded by the Butrint Lagoon, the Vivari Canal, and dense natural forests.

Parku Kombëtar i Butrintit is a protected national park in southern Albania near Sarandë that combines one of the country's most significant archaeological sites with wetlands, forests, and coastal ecosystems. Its blend of ancient history and biodiversity has earned international recognition, including UNESCO World Heritage status for the archaeological site, making it one of Albania's premier cultural and natural destinations.

Historical significance

Historical significance

At the heart of the park lies the ancient city of Butrint, a settlement occupied from prehistoric times through the Greek, Roman, Byzantine, Venetian, and Ottoman periods. Rather than representing a single civilization, the site preserves layers of Mediterranean history, with monuments such as the ancient theater, city walls, basilicas, baths, and fortifications illustrating more than two millennia of continuous occupation.

Natural environment

Natural environment

Beyond its archaeological remains, the park protects an important mosaic of lagoons, freshwater lakes, marshes, reed beds, woodlands, and coastal habitats. These ecosystems support a rich variety of birds, fish, reptiles, and plants, making the area valuable for both conservation and wildlife observation. The surrounding wetlands have also received international recognition under the Ramsar Convention.

Visitor experience

Visitor experience

Visitors typically follow a walking route through shaded archaeological ruins overlooking the Vivari Channel and Butrint Lake. Highlights include the Greek theater, Roman forum, early Christian baptistery, Venetian castle, and panoramic viewpoints where cultural landmarks blend seamlessly with the surrounding landscape. The park is located roughly 18 km (11 mi) south of Sarandë and is commonly visited together with nearby Ksamil and the Albanian Riviera.

Why it stands out

Why it stands out

What distinguishes Parku Kombëtar i Butrintit is the close integration of cultural heritage and protected nature. Few places in the Mediterranean preserve such an extensive archaeological sequence within an ecologically significant national park, allowing visitors to experience ancient history while surrounded by wetlands and coastal scenery. This combination has made Butrint one of Albania's most important heritage destinations since its inscription on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1992.
