Gjiri i Gramës is a secluded bay on the western coast of the Karaburun Peninsula in southern Albania, facing the Ionian Sea. It is renowned for its crystal-clear waters, dramatic limestone cliffs, and extraordinary collection of ancient inscriptions carved into the surrounding rocks. The combination of natural beauty and maritime history has made it one of Albania's most distinctive coastal landmarks.
Natural Setting

The bay lies within the protected Karaburun-Sazan marine area and is surrounded by steep rocky slopes that descend directly into the sea. Its small pebble beach, turquoise water, sea caves, and relative isolation create an atmosphere that feels largely untouched by mass tourism. Access is typically by boat from Vlorë or Orikum, although challenging hiking routes also reach the area.
Ancient Inscriptions

More than 1,500 carvings have been documented on the cliffs around the bay, with examples dating from the 3rd century BCE through the medieval period. Sailors, merchants, soldiers, and travelers used the sheltered cove as a refuge from storms and left messages, prayers, names, and dedications carved into the rock, creating one of the most important collections of maritime inscriptions in the Adriatic-Ionian region.
Historical Importance

For centuries, the bay served as a natural harbor along a rugged and often dangerous stretch of coastline. Ancient and medieval mariners sought protection here when weather conditions became hazardous. The archaeological record preserved on the cliffs provides rare evidence of navigation, trade, religious practices, and travel across the Mediterranean over many centuries.
Why It Stands Out
What distinguishes Gjiri i Gramës from many Mediterranean beaches is the rare combination of spectacular coastal scenery and over two millennia of human history engraved directly into the landscape. Few places in Albania—and few in the wider Mediterranean—offer such a visible connection between natural shelter, maritime travel, and archaeological heritage.
