It is one of Albania's best-preserved Ottoman-era fortifications and is especially known for its dramatic seaside setting, distinctive triangular design, and close association with Ali Pasha of Ioannina.
History

The fortress is generally attributed to Ali Pasha of Ioannina, with most historical evidence indicating construction around 1804, although historians have debated whether it replaced or incorporated an earlier Venetian or Ottoman fortification. Its commanding position allowed control of the sheltered harbor and surrounding coastline, making it part of Ali Pasha's broader network of defensive strongholds in southern Albania.
Architecture

The castle is notable for its triangular layout, with three massive bastions at the corners. Inside are vaulted chambers, barracks, storage rooms, guard positions, and a central domed hall supported by large pillars. Originally built on a small island, it is now connected to the mainland by a narrow causeway that creates one of the site's most recognizable views.
Later use and visiting

Because of its strategic location, the fortress continued to have military importance well into the 20th century, including during the communist era. Today it is open to visitors and offers panoramic views over the turquoise waters of Porto Palermo Bay. Just north of the castle lies the former Porto Palermo submarine facility, another reminder of the area's military history during the Cold War.
Why it stands out

Kalaja e Porto Palermos combines historic architecture, coastal scenery, and military history in a compact site. Its remarkably intact condition, picturesque position overlooking the Ionian Sea, and easy access from the coastal SH8 highway make it one of the signature landmarks of the Albanian Riviera.
