Muradie Mosque is a historic Ottoman-era mosque in Vlorë, Albania, and one of the city's most important architectural landmarks. Built in the 16th century during the reign of Sultan Suleiman the Magnificent, it is widely attributed to the celebrated Ottoman architect Mimar Sinan and is recognized as a Cultural Monument of Albania.
Historical Background

The mosque was constructed around 1542 and stands near the heart of Vlorë, close to Flag Square. It represents one of the oldest surviving Ottoman structures in southern Albania and reflects the expansion of Ottoman urban and religious architecture across the Balkans during the 16th century.
Architecture

The building follows a classic Ottoman design centered on a cubic prayer hall crowned by a single dome. One of its most distinctive features is the twelve-sided drum supporting the dome, while the slender stone minaret rises from a polygonal base. The exterior masonry alternates carefully arranged stone and brick courses, creating a refined visual rhythm characteristic of Sinan-era architecture. A former portico once stood on the northern side, though only traces remain today.
Cultural Significance
The mosque is considered among the finest examples of Ottoman architecture in Albania. Its association with Mimar Sinan—often regarded as the greatest architect of the Ottoman Empire—gives it exceptional historical value. Beyond its religious role, the structure serves as an important symbol of Vlorë's multicultural heritage and long urban history.
Visiting Today

Visitors can find the mosque in central Vlorë at Muradie Mosque. The monument remains an active place of worship while also functioning as one of the city's most visited historical attractions. Its isolated position makes it easy to view from all sides, allowing appreciation of the dome, masonry, and minaret even from the surrounding streets.
