What can be seen

What can be seen

The archaeological park preserves the remains of a fortified hilltop city that flourished from the Classical through the Roman periods. Visitors can explore sections of the city walls, an acropolis, a Doric-style temple traditionally associated with Aphrodite, residential remains, and one of Albania's best-preserved ancient stadiums, which is among the site's defining landmarks. Much of the ancient settlement remains unexcavated, making Amantia an active place of archaeological research as well as a visitor destination.

Historical importance

Historical importance

Founded around the 5th century BC, Amantia became the political and cultural center of the Amantes. Its strategic hilltop position overlooked routes linking the interior with the Adriatic coast, contributing to its regional influence. Under Roman rule, the city continued to develop before eventually declining during late antiquity. The Albanian government designated the site as an archaeological park in 2003 to protect its cultural heritage.
