It has long been regarded as one of the cultural and religious centers of the Mirdita region, known for its Catholic heritage, historical leadership, and role in Albania's national history.
Historical significance

For centuries, Orosh served as the traditional center of both the secular and spiritual authority of Mirdita. The hereditary leaders of the Gjomarkaj family governed the region from here, while the local abbey functioned as an important religious institution where tribal elders gathered to discuss regional affairs.
A notable moment in Albanian history occurred on 26 April 1911, when Terenzio Tocci assembled Mirdita's chieftains in Orosh, proclaimed Albania's independence, raised the Albanian flag, and announced a provisional government during the Albanian National Awakening.
Religious heritage

The village is best known for the Abbey and Church of Saint Alexander (Shën Llezhri), one of the most significant Catholic sites in northern Albania. The abbey has medieval origins, later became a Benedictine territorial abbey, was destroyed during the communist era, and has since been rebuilt. It remains a symbol of Mirdita's strong Catholic identity.
Landscape and culture

Orosh lies amid rugged mountains, forests, alpine meadows, and karst formations, making it attractive for hiking and nature tourism. The surrounding protected uplands—often referred to as Bjeshka e Oroshit—feature springs, caves, and traditional pastoral landscapes that reflect the region's long-standing way of life.
Today

Although the village is now relatively small, with the former municipal unit recording about 900 residents in the 2023 census, Orosh remains an important destination for visitors interested in Albanian history, Catholic heritage, and the traditional culture of Mirdita.
