Munellë Mountain

Munellë Mountain (also called Munellë) is a mountain in northern Albania, on the border between the Mirditë and Pukë areas of Lezhë County.

Rising to about 1,990–1,996 meters above sea level, it is one of the highest and most prominent peaks in the region and is recognized for its remarkable biodiversity and distinctive karst landscape.

Landscape and geography

Landscape and geography

The mountain lies between the valleys of the Great Fan and Little Fan rivers. Its broad summit plateau is shaped by limestone geology, featuring numerous dolines (sinkholes), caves, and other karst formations. Steep limestone cliffs characterize parts of the northwest and southeast slopes, while other sections descend more gently through forested terrain.

Nature and wildlife

Nature and wildlife

Munellë is considered one of Albania's most biologically important mountain areas. Lower elevations support oak forests, which transition into beech and black pine forests before giving way to alpine meadows near the summit. The mountain provides habitat for brown bears, wolves, chamois, and numerous bird species. It is especially significant as one of the last strongholds of the critically endangered Balkan lynx, making conservation of the area a national priority.

Protected status

The Munellë area has received protected status as a Managed Nature Reserve, reflecting its ecological importance and relatively undisturbed mountain ecosystems. The reserve safeguards extensive forests, alpine habitats, and wildlife while helping maintain ecological connections with neighboring mountain ranges in northern Albania.
