It is one of the country's most significant biodiversity hotspots and an internationally recognized bird habitat, attracting both nature enthusiasts and birdwatchers.
Landscape and ecosystems
The reserve covers roughly 44 km² and includes Kunë Island, the Kunë-Vain Lagoon, coastal dunes, reed beds, Mediterranean woodland, and both freshwater and saltwater habitats. This mix of ecosystems supports an exceptional variety of wildlife and helps protect the northern Adriatic coastline from erosion while providing important breeding and migration areas for birds.
Wildlife

The park is best known for its rich birdlife and has been recognized as an Important Bird Area. Nearly 200 bird species have been recorded, including greater flamingos, Dalmatian pelicans, pygmy cormorants, ferruginous ducks, black-winged stilts, and numerous migratory waterfowl. Beyond birds, the reserve is home to diverse fish, mammals, amphibians, reptiles, insects, and hundreds of plant species, making it one of Albania's most biologically diverse protected areas.
Visiting experience

Visitors typically explore the reserve via walking paths and unpaved roads that cross the lagoons toward the Adriatic coast. Observation towers and viewing platforms provide opportunities for birdwatching, photography, and panoramic views over the wetlands, while nearby beaches and seafood restaurants make the area a popular destination for a relaxed day in nature. Spring and autumn migrations are generally considered the best times for wildlife observation.
Conservation importance

The area has a long conservation history, having first received protected status as a hunting reserve before being reorganized as the modern nature reserve in 2010. Today it forms part of a broader protected coastal landscape managed for biodiversity conservation, habitat restoration, and sustainable tourism, with ongoing efforts to improve ecological monitoring and park management.
