Convened at the initiative of Gjergj Kastrioti Skënderbeu, it brought together several Albanian noble families to coordinate resistance against the expanding Ottoman Empire. It is widely regarded as one of the defining events of medieval Albanian history and an important symbol of political unity.
Background

By the early 1440s, Albanian principalities faced increasing pressure from Ottoman expansion. Rather than acting independently, leading nobles agreed to cooperate in matters of defense while retaining authority over their own territories. This arrangement represented a practical military alliance rather than the creation of a fully centralized state.
Principal participants

The assembly included representatives of prominent noble families such as the Kastrioti, Arianiti, Dukagjini, Muzaka, Thopia, Balsha, Spani, and Zaharia families, along with other regional leaders. Skënderbeu was chosen as the alliance's commander, responsible for directing its combined military efforts, while each member continued governing their own lands and contributing troops and financial support.
Historical significance
The League created a coordinated military structure that strengthened resistance during the long Albanian–Ottoman conflicts. Under Skënderbeu's leadership, its forces achieved several notable victories, beginning with the Battle of Torvioll later in 1444. Although the alliance evolved over time and experienced internal divisions, it became an enduring symbol of cooperation among Albanian rulers and remains central to Albania's historical memory and national identity.
Legacy
Today, the Besëlidhja e Lezhës is commemorated as a milestone in Albanian history. Historians generally describe it as the first broad political and military union of Albanian principalities during the Middle Ages, while also noting that its members preserved substantial autonomy rather than forming a unified kingdom or centralized government.
