Memorial and Tomb of Gjergj Kastrioti Skanderbeg

Built in 1981 over the remains of the medieval Church of Saint Nicholas, it marks the traditional burial place of Skanderbeg after his death in 1468 and is one of the country's most important historical and symbolic landmarks.

Historical significance

The site is closely linked to Gjergj Kastrioti Skënderbeu (1405–1468), the military leader who united many Albanian principalities against the Ottoman Empire. He died in Lezhë and was buried in the Church of Saint Nicholas. Over the centuries the church was converted into the Selimie Mosque, and later archaeological excavations revealed earlier medieval and even late antique structures beneath it.

Architecture and memorial

The modern memorial incorporates the preserved ruins of the historic church within a striking marble-and-glass structure. Visitors can see the symbolic tomb, architectural remains from different historical periods, and displays related to Skanderbeg's life, including replicas of his famous helmet and sword. The original artifacts are preserved in Vienna.

Visiting

The memorial is located near the center of Lezhë and is one of the city's most visited attractions. According to current business information, it is generally open Monday–Saturday from 8:00 AM to 7:00 PM and Sunday from 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM, though hours may change seasonally.
