Lezha Castle is a historic hilltop fortress overlooking the city of Lezhë in northwestern Albania. Built on a strategically important site with origins dating back to the ancient city of Lissus, it has been shaped by Illyrian, Roman, Byzantine, Venetian, and Ottoman civilizations, making it one of the country's most significant cultural monuments.
Historical significance

The fortress occupies a commanding position above the Drin River plain and the Adriatic coast, allowing it to control important trade and military routes for centuries. It is closely associated with League of Lezhë, when Gjergj Kastrioti Skanderbeg united Albanian princes in 1444 to coordinate resistance against the Ottoman Empire—an event regarded as a defining moment in Albanian history.
Architecture and remains

Layers of history are visible throughout the site. Visitors can see surviving Illyrian fortifications alongside Roman features, Byzantine masonry, Venetian defensive works, and Ottoman additions. Among the most notable remains are the ruins of Ottoman buildings, a historic mosque, defensive towers, and sections of ancient walls that illustrate how the fortress evolved over many centuries.
Visiting experience

The castle is renowned for its panoramic views across the Lezhë plain, the Drin River valley, and the Adriatic Sea. The hilltop setting makes it a popular destination for history enthusiasts, photographers, and travelers exploring northern Albania. Comfortable walking shoes are recommended because the terrain includes uneven stone paths and uphill sections.
