The prehistoric settlement of Maliq
One of the most important centers of Albanian prehistory.
- City: Korçë
The Prehistoric Settlement of Maliq is one of Albania's most important archaeological sites, located near the town of Maliq in the Korçë Basin. Its long sequence of occupation, spanning from the Neolithic through the Bronze and into the Iron Age, has made it a key reference site for understanding prehistoric societies in the southwestern Balkans.
Archaeological significance

The settlement is especially famous for preserving evidence of lake-dwelling (pile-dwelling) communities that once stood along the shores of the former Lake Malik. Excavations have uncovered wooden structural remains, pottery, stone and bone tools, and other artifacts that document thousands of years of cultural development. The archaeological sequence established at Maliq has been so influential that researchers use phases such as Maliq I, Maliq II, and Maliq III to describe stages of prehistoric culture in Albania.
What makes the site distinctive

Unlike many prehistoric settlements that represent a single period, Maliq contains multiple occupation layers, allowing archaeologists to trace changes in settlement patterns, architecture, technology, and pottery styles over millennia. Scientific studies have also revealed evidence of long-distance exchange, including the use of natural bitumen sourced from southern Albania on Neolithic pottery.
Research and legacy
Excavations began in the mid-20th century after drainage works around the former lake exposed archaeological remains, and the site continues to be the focus of new research using modern archaeological methods. Together with nearby prehistoric sites around the Korçë Basin, Maliq has become one of the principal foundations for reconstructing Albania's prehistoric past and the early development of farming communities in the Balkans.
