Mali i Moravës (Morava Highlands) is a mountain range and natural landmark immediately east of Korçë in southeastern Albania. Known for its scenic viewpoints, forests, and hiking opportunities, it forms one of the defining natural landscapes around Korçë and is a popular destination for outdoor recreation throughout the year.

Landscape and geography

Landscape and geography

The range extends for roughly 30 km and reaches its highest elevation at Maja e Badaroshës (2,042 m). It lies between the Korçë Plain to the west and the Devoll Plain to the east, with most of the terrain ranging from 1,000 to 1,500 meters above sea level. The mountains are composed primarily of sandstone and molasse deposits, creating rounded ridges and varied relief.

Nature

Nature

The eastern slopes support forests of beech, pine, and fir, while the western side is more open, although reforestation has expanded woodland in recent decades. The area provides habitat for wildlife including brown bears, wild boar, and roe deer, making it an important natural ecosystem in southeastern Albania.

Regional significance

Beyond its recreational appeal, Mali i Moravës contributes to the region's hydrology by feeding streams that flow toward the Devoll and Osum river systems. The foothills also contain notable mineral deposits, including silica sands and coal-bearing formations that have played a role in the area's geology and economic history.
