Vithkuq is a historic mountain village in southeastern Korçë, known for its Byzantine and post-Byzantine heritage, Orthodox churches, and scenic natural surroundings. Once a flourishing regional center of culture and trade, it is now valued for its well-preserved history, religious monuments, and peaceful alpine landscape.
History

During the 17th and 18th centuries, Vithkuq was an important cultural, educational, and commercial center along regional trade routes. Historical accounts describe a prosperous settlement with numerous neighborhoods, churches, and monasteries before warfare, economic decline, and migration reduced it to a much smaller mountain village.
Heritage and landmarks

The village is especially renowned for its Orthodox religious architecture. Several historic churches and monasteries survive, including the Church of St. Michael and the Monastery of Saints Peter and Paul, both noted for their frescoes and traditional Balkan ecclesiastical design. These monuments reflect Vithkuq's role as an important religious center during the Ottoman period.
Nature and visiting

Set at roughly 1,300 meters (4,265 feet) above sea level, Vithkuq is surrounded by forests, mountain meadows, and hiking routes. Visitors are drawn by its cool summer climate, traditional stone architecture, local cuisine, and opportunities for walking, photography, and exploring the quiet countryside.
Cultural significance

Vithkuq has produced several notable figures in Albanian history, including Naum Veqilharxhi, creator of the historic Vithkuqi alphabet for the Albanian language. The village also played a role during the World War II, when the first assault brigade of the Albanian National Liberation Army was formed nearby in 1943.
