Voskopojë is a historic mountain village in southeastern Albania, about 20 km west of Korçë. Once one of the Balkans' most important cultural and commercial centers during the 18th century, it is now known for its remarkable Orthodox churches, peaceful alpine setting, and well-preserved cultural heritage.

Historical significance

Historical significance

During its golden age in the mid-1700s, Voskopojë (also known historically as Moscopole) grew into a prosperous center of trade, education, and publishing within the Ottoman Empire. It hosted one of the first printing presses in the Ottoman Balkans outside Constantinople, as well as important schools and numerous churches. A series of raids and shifting trade routes led to its decline in the late 18th century, transforming the once-thriving town into the small village seen today.

Cultural heritage

Cultural heritage

The village is especially celebrated for its post-Byzantine churches, many decorated with outstanding frescoes and iconography. Surviving landmarks such as the Church of Saint Nicholas, Church of Saint Mary, and Saint Athanasius preserve some of Albania's finest examples of Orthodox religious art. The area remains an important destination for cultural tourism and Orthodox heritage.

Visiting today

Visitors come to Voskopojë for its quiet atmosphere, traditional stone architecture, mountain scenery, and hiking opportunities. Family-run guesthouses, local restaurants, and nearby forest trails make it a popular weekend escape from Korçë, while winter snow adds to its appeal during the colder months.

Why it stands out

Why it stands out

Voskopojë is unusual because it combines major historical importance with the character of a small mountain village. Its blend of Aromanian, Albanian, and Orthodox cultural influences, together with its surviving churches and scenic surroundings, makes it one of southeastern Albania's most distinctive heritage destinations.
