The Canyons of Këlcyra
The Këlcyra Canyons are one of the most spectacular natural formations in southern Albania, created by the Vjosa River, one of the last wild rivers in Europe. They are located at the entrance to the Përmet area and are considered a “natural gateway” between Tepelena and Përmet.

Kanionet e Këlcyrës (also known as the Këlcyrë Gorge or Gryka e Këlcyrës) is a dramatic river gorge in southern Albania near the town of Këlcyrë. Carved by the Vjosa River, it is one of the country's most striking natural landscapes and has become a popular destination for hiking, sightseeing, photography, and nature tourism.
Landscape

The gorge stretches for roughly 13 kilometers between Këlcyrë and Dragot, with steep limestone walls rising to nearly 1,000 meters in places. The river has sculpted a narrow passage through the surrounding mountains, creating dramatic cliffs, caves, and numerous karst springs that feed into the Vjosa.
Highlights

One of the area's best-known attractions is Uji i Zi ("Black Water"), a vivid blue-green karst spring that emerges beside the Vjosa, producing striking color contrasts in the water. Visitors can also explore nearby caves, including the Mezhgoran and Dragot caves, while trails and viewpoints offer panoramic views of the gorge and surrounding peaks.
History and significance
Beyond its natural beauty, the gorge has long served as an important transportation corridor through southern Albania. It also holds historical significance because the pass was the site of military operations during the Greco-Italian War, making it notable for both its geography and history.
