Lugina e Drinos (the Drino Valley) is a broad river valley in southern Albania centered on the Drino River and closely associated with the historic region around Gjirokastër. It is one of the country's most important cultural landscapes, combining fertile plains, mountain scenery, archaeological sites, monasteries, and the UNESCO-recognized heritage of Gjirokastër.
Geographic Setting

The valley follows the course of the Drino River between mountain ranges in southern Albania before the river joins the Vjosë River watershed. The landscape consists of agricultural plains framed by steep hills and mountains, creating one of the most distinctive natural corridors in the region.
Historical Importance

For centuries, the valley served as a strategic route linking communities across southern Albania and neighboring regions. Its position helped shape the development of Gjirokastër, whose historic center gained prominence through control of movement and trade along the valley. Archaeological evidence and historical records indicate continuous settlement in the area from ancient times onward.
Cultural and Religious Heritage
The Drino Valley contains numerous historic religious monuments, including Orthodox monasteries dating largely from the 16th and 17th centuries. These sites preserve frescoes, stone architecture, and traditions that reflect the region's multicultural history and long-standing religious significance.
Connection to Gjirokastër
The valley is inseparable from the identity of Gjirokastër, often called the "City of Stone." The city rises above the Drino Valley and is renowned for its Ottoman-era tower houses, fortress, and remarkably preserved urban fabric. UNESCO specifically identifies Gjirokastër as a historic town situated within the Drinos Valley.
