Blue Eye

One of the most famous natural springs in Albania, with crystal blue water and great unexplored depth.

Syri i Kaltër (“Blue Eye”) is a remarkable karst spring in southern Albania near Delvinë and Sarandë. Known for its vivid sapphire-blue center surrounded by turquoise water, it is one of Albania’s most recognizable natural attractions and a protected natural area. The spring feeds the Bistricë River and draws visitors from across the Balkans and beyond for its unusual color, clarity, and geological significance.

What Makes It Special?

What Makes It Special?

The spring resembles a human eye, which inspired its name: a deep blue “pupil” surrounded by lighter blue and green shades. Water emerges from a submerged karst shaft under high pressure, creating a constantly moving, almost hypnotic effect. Divers have explored beyond 50 meters, yet the true depth of the underwater cavity remains uncertain.

Natural Setting

Natural Setting

The spring lies on the western slopes of the Mali i Gjerë mountains within a protected landscape of forests, streams, and limestone formations. Oak and plane trees dominate the immediate surroundings, while the exceptionally clear water supports a distinctive freshwater ecosystem. The protected area was established as a natural monument and later expanded to provide broader environmental protection.

Significance

Beyond its beauty, Syri i Kaltër is an important hydrological feature and one of Albania’s most powerful freshwater springs. It serves as a major source of the Bistricë River and has become an iconic symbol of Albanian nature tourism. Its combination of geological mystery, vivid coloration, and protected surroundings makes it one of the country's most celebrated natural landmarks.

Visiting the Site

Syri i Kaltër is located roughly between Sarandë and Gjirokastër, making it a popular stop for travelers exploring southern Albania. Visitors typically walk a short path from the entrance area to viewing platforms overlooking the spring. The water remains cold year-round—around 10–13°C—which contributes to its clarity and striking appearance.
