Lagjja Palorto is one of the historic neighborhoods of Gjirokastër, a UNESCO-listed city in southern Albania known for its distinctive stone architecture. Located west of the Old Bazaar, Palorto is especially famous for its concentration of grand Ottoman-era tower houses and its role in preserving the city's traditional urban character.
Architectural Character

Palorto contains some of the most impressive historic residences in Gjirokastër. The neighborhood's steep cobbled lanes are lined with large stone houses featuring fortified lower floors, wooden upper stories, and panoramic views over the Drino Valley. These buildings exemplify the architectural style that helped earn Gjirokastër international recognition as a well-preserved Ottoman town.
Landmark Houses

The district is best known for Zekate House, one of Albania's finest examples of a fortified manor house. Built in 1811–1812 by Beqir Zeko, the residence combines defensive features with richly decorated living spaces, illustrating the wealth and status of prominent families during the Ottoman period.
Historical Significance
Palorto is among the traditional quarters that formed the historic core of Gjirokastër. Historical accounts identify it as one of the neighborhoods extending across the hills surrounding the city's fortress during the Ottoman era. The district contributes to the broader cultural landscape of the "City of Stone," where hundreds of protected historic buildings survive.
Visiting Experience
Walking through Palorto offers one of the clearest impressions of Gjirokastër's historic identity. The neighborhood's stone-roofed houses, narrow streets, and hillside setting create many of the iconic views associated with the city, while its preserved residences provide insight into elite domestic life in southern Albania during the 18th and 19th centuries.
