Shtëpia e Skëndulajve (Skënduli House) is one of the best-known historic homes in Gjirokastër, preserved as a museum that showcases traditional Ottoman-era domestic architecture. The house is regarded as one of the most authentic surviving residences in the city's UNESCO-listed historic quarter and remains closely associated with the Skënduli family who originally built and inhabited it.

Architecture and Design

Architecture and Design

The house is a remarkable example of the fortified tower-house style that made Gjirokastër famous. Built largely of stone and wood, it contains numerous original architectural elements, including carved ceilings, fireplaces, guest rooms, and defensive features that reflected both wealth and security concerns during the Ottoman period.

Historical Significance

Historical Significance

Dating to the early 19th century and often described as being more than 300 years old in local tourism materials, the residence belonged to one of the city's prosperous families. During the communist era it was used as the city's ethnographic museum before being returned to the family, who continued preserving it and opening it to visitors.

What Makes It Unique

According to local historical accounts, the house once contained 12 rooms, 9 fireplaces, 6 bathrooms, 4 hammams (Turkish baths), dozens of doors and windows, and substantial fortified walls. Many furnishings and structural features remain original, giving visitors an unusually authentic look at elite household life in southern Albania during the Ottoman period.

Visiting Experience

A visit typically includes a guided tour through the family rooms and reception areas, often accompanied by stories about the house's history and the traditions of Gjirokastër. The museum is located in the historic Palorto neighborhood, close to other cultural attractions in the old town.
