Qyteti Antik i Nikaias (Ancient City of Nikaia) is an archaeological site near Klos in Fier County, Albania, representing an important Illyrian settlement that later adopted many features of the Greek polis. Located close to the ancient city of Byllis, it offers valuable insight into the cultural exchange between Illyrian communities and their Greek neighbors during the Classical and Hellenistic periods.

Historical background

Historical background

Nikaia emerged around the 4th century BC in the territory of the Bylliones, an Illyrian tribe. Archaeological and epigraphic evidence indicates that the settlement developed an urban layout, fortifications, and civic institutions influenced by the Greek city-state model while remaining part of the indigenous Illyrian cultural landscape. Excavations have linked the site with the ancient city mentioned by the 6th-century writer Stephanus of Byzantium.

Archaeological significance

The inscriptions discovered at Nikaia are written in Greek and document civic institutions, officials, and religious practices typical of the Greek world. These findings have made the site particularly important for understanding how Illyrian communities incorporated Greek language, political organization, and religious traditions while maintaining their regional identity.
