Stelush Castle

Medieval fortification linked to the history of the Albanian principalities.

Kalaja e Stelushit is a historic hilltop fortress in northeastern Albania, located near Qafë-Murrë in the municipality of Bulqizë, Dibër. Perched on a rocky ridge overlooking important mountain routes, it is one of the region's most significant archaeological and medieval sites, closely associated with the Kastrioti family and the historical landscape linked to Skanderbeg.

Historical Importance

Historical Importance

The fortress occupies a strategically dominant position above the route connecting the Dibër basin with the Mat valley and Albania's coastal regions. Archaeological evidence indicates occupation from prehistoric and Illyrian times, while the site became especially important during the medieval period when a settlement developed around the fortress. Historical sources describe Stelush as a notable urban center connected to the Kastrioti domain.

Architecture and Archaeology

Architecture and Archaeology

The castle preserves multiple defensive lines, including three rings of fortification walls dating to Late Antiquity and the medieval era. Sections were constructed using opus incertum masonry, and traces of even earlier fortifications survive on terraces south of the main fortress. These remains demonstrate that the site evolved over many centuries rather than being built in a single period.

Connection to the Kastrioti Family

Connection to the Kastrioti Family

Stelush is frequently referred to as Varoshi Castle or Skënderbeu Castle. Sources identify the surrounding medieval town as an important center of the Kastrioti family, the noble house from which Albania's national hero, Gjergj Kastrioti Skanderbeg, emerged. This association gives the site a special place in Albanian historical memory.

Location and Visitor Experience

Location and Visitor Experience

The fortress stands at an elevation exceeding 1,000 meters near the border zone between Dibër and Mat. Its dramatic position above the Varosh canyon offers expansive mountain views and illustrates why the location was chosen for defense and control of regional travel corridors. Today, the ruins attract visitors interested in Albanian history, archaeology, hiking, and cultural heritage.

Why It Matters

Kalaja e Stelushit represents a rare combination of prehistoric, Illyrian, late antique, and medieval heritage in a single location. The surviving fortifications, links to the Kastrioti family, and commanding mountain landscape make it one of the most historically significant yet lesser-known fortress sites in northern and central Albania.
