Mali i Korabit (Mount Korab) is the highest mountain in Albania and North Macedonia, located along the border between the two countries in the Dibër region. Rising to 2,764 meters (9,068 feet), it is the most prominent peak of the Korab mountain range and one of the most significant mountains in the Balkans.
Geographic Significance

The summit stands on the Albania–North Macedonia frontier and is one of the rare peaks in Europe that serves as the highest point of two countries simultaneously. The Korab range extends roughly 40 kilometers north to south and forms part of the mountainous landscape between the Black Drin and Radika river valleys.
Landscape and Nature

The mountain is known for its dramatic alpine scenery, including rocky ridges, high meadows, glacial landforms, and panoramic views across eastern Albania and western North Macedonia. The Albanian side lies within the protected Korab–Koritnik Nature Park, which supports diverse plant communities including beech forests, Bosnian pine, and other mountain species.
Hiking and Access

Mali i Korabit is one of Albania's premier hiking destinations. The most common ascent begins from the village of Radomirë in Dibër and is generally considered a demanding day hike, typically taking around 7–9 hours round trip depending on conditions and pace. Access restrictions that existed during the communist era have long been removed, making the mountain accessible from both the Albanian and North Macedonian sides.
Why It Matters

Beyond being Albania's "roof," Mali i Korabit is an important symbol of the country's mountainous landscape and outdoor heritage. Its combination of elevation, prominence, biodiversity, and cross-border location has made it a landmark for mountaineers, nature enthusiasts, and visitors seeking some of the most spectacular high-altitude scenery in the Balkans.
